Ohio's Statewide Advisory Council

Ohio's Statewide Family Engagement Center is excited to announce the creation of a Statewide Advisory Council as part of Ohio’s new Statewide Family Engagement Center. We are seeking a diverse group of parents, guardians, and caretakers of children birth to Grade 12 from all regions of Ohio. You are invited to apply to be a part of this exciting opportunity to share your ideas on this Council about how Ohio families and schools can work together to support the education of all children. Language interpreters and other supports will be available at Council meetings if needed.

Professional development available for sign language interpreter May 7

The Ohio Center for Deafblind Education and the Helen Keller National Center are offering professional development for educational sign language interpreters in Ohio on May 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program will be held on the Dublin campus of the University of Dayton's School of Education and Health Sciences Grant Center. The training will focus on strategies that can be used in the classroom when working with a student who has combined vision and hearing loss, as well as information on identifying students and resources available. Time will be given during the training for participants to practice the techniques discussed during the training. Lunch will be provided for all registered participants. Heather Endres, BSW, NIC Advanced, will facilitate the training.

Straight A Fund FY17 Innovation Workshop

ODE’s Straight A Program provides grants to fund a wide range of education innovations. Recipients of these grants are public schools, ESCs and IHEs. In prior years Straight A staff has provided pre-application training through both webinars and face-to-face workshops that focused primarily on the application and grant process.

2016 Roster Verification and Value Added Training

Each year, Ohio teachers receive value-added student growth measure reports to help with instructional planning. During roster verification, schools can validate which teachers teach what subjects to which students — so that the reports will reflect this important information. Whether you are new to — or experienced with — the process, there is training to support you. The first training option is March 22 — so sign up for a session soon.

Disaster and Preparedness Training Opportunity

Training Opportunity:

The University of Cincinnati Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities is holding a Disaster and Preparedness Training at the Ohio University Innovation Center on Saturday, February 20th from 10am to 2pm. This training is intended for individuals with developmental disabilities and their caretakers. There is no charge for this training and participants get a free Emergency Preparedness Kit.

There were only 4 people registered in STARS for Wednesday's CPI Refresher class in Chauncey so the class is being cancelled since a minimum of 10 people is needed to conduct the training. Registration is open for two upcoming classes on March 23rd (Fort Frye High School) or March 30th (Chauncey -- SST 16).  If by chance you know of others who were planning to come to this training, but didn't register through STARS, please let them know of this cancellation.

Level 3 Emergency-Offices will be closed.

The Alternate Assessment trainings are wrapping up before testing begins next month.  An updated training for teachers who have given the assessment will be offered next Thursday, January 15th.  A new training date has been added for NEW teachers who have never given the assessment, it will be offered on January 28th.  Please register via STARS to attend either of these sessions.

Planning and Implementing Evidence Based Practices for Students with High Functioning Autism scheduled in Chauncey on October 30, 2015 has been cancelled. 

Early Childhood Professional Development Opportunities

Research has shown that quality programs have a positive impact on child outcomes, school readiness and school success. What is a quality program? How does a program’s vision and desires for the children they care for align with quality measures? Participants will explore these topics, including quality environment and interaction indicators and various program assessment tools. An overview on considerations for selecting program assessment tools will also be presented.

Early Learning Assessment (ELA) Refresher Training

This training is designed for teachers who have already been trained on the Early Learning Assessment and are interested in being updated on the changes to the ELA. This training will review the changes to the assessment, methods to use to capture evidence for scoring the assessment, and connections between the assessment and curriculum goals. An overview of the KReady system will also be included.

In the true spirit of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Dive Into UDL: Immersive Practices to Develop Expert Learners meets the needs of practitioners at any level of education. The authors have designed a UDL personalized learning journey that allows readers to understand UDL by wading in, doing shallow swims, and taking deep dives. Readers are invited to customize how the book is used by choosing what to read and how to read it. The book and resources that accompany it are how to actually DO UDL! This book study is for individuals wanting to increase their knowledge at any level from exploration to classroom implementation. It is a self-paced study with assigned reading, activities, implementation, and reflection.

November 26, 2013 Praxis Reading Study Group Cancelled

Message from Beth Duffy:

Hello all!
With the possibility of inclement weather approaching tomorrow evening, I'm canceling our "face-to-face" study session for November 26th.  Rather, please use this time to delve deeper into the study materials you've received to date.  Additionally, I'm sending a link to the Reading Rockets website, which provides a wealth of information for before, during and after strategies for all components of reading instruction.  In addition to the strategies, please pay close attention to the research on this page around explicit instruction as well as differentiating for English language learners.  The time spent engaged with the study resources will suffice for those of you applying for grad credit as well.
I'm confident, that I have included everyone on our study group list serve, but just in case, please let others in your building know of our schedule change and share this website with them as well.  I will plan to see all of you at our next schedule session on December 4th.

Child Outcomes Summary

Part 1
This training provides an introduction to the Child Outcomes Summary process, guidance on how to describe children’s functioning in the three outcome areas, and exploration of the five areas of essential knowledge that teams must have for completion of the COS process.

 

Part 2
This training will include key features of the Child Outcomes Summary process and the required information necessary to successfully complete the process. Participants will complete application activities and explore the requirements and resources specific to state policies about collecting child outcomes data.

During the 2014-2015 school year, the UDL Center at OCALI, in collaboration with Michigan (MITS), Indiana  (PATINS), Texas (TATN), Maryland (MATN) and Minnesota Department of Education will host a series of live webinars and are offering graduate credit through Ashland University. Please see details below for registering online. The webinars are offered on different dates and times to fit your schedule. Participants can choose the webinars that fit their professional development needs and can receive one credit hour for online learning, and a project.

Technology Tuesday

Starting the first Tuesday in October the State Support team Region 16 will provideclassroom technology training. Each month will have a different focus. Sessions will allow teachers time to learn the technology and have time to experiment and trouble shoot. Participants can attend one or all sessions. Rio Credit pending approval.

Federal Court Instructs Ohio Districts to Post Information for Parents Concerning Data Release

A U.S. District Court has ordered that 2013-2014 school year records from the Ohio Department of Education’s Educational Management Information System be turned over to Disability Rights Ohio as part of an ongoing lawsuit.

Transforming Integrated Systems - Rescheduled

Due to excessive amounts of school cancellations in our region over the past several weeks, The Office of Expectional Children is rescheduling this event in our area to May 15 & 16.

This is a regional event for 4 State Support Team Regions.  Therefore, we have a limited number of seats available.  If you are from Region 16 and are interested in bringing a team from your district, please contact your state support team consultant.  If you are from another region and you had already registered in STARS, you will need to reregister for the newly scheduled event.
