Early Literacy- Birth to Grade 3
The Ohio Department of Education refers to early literacy as “what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read or write.” Early childhood educators know that literacy development begins at birth and lays the foundation for later success in school. Children continue to obtain foundational skills as they move into kindergarten through grade 3.
- Early Literacy Pilot
SST 16 is working with a school district in the region for the literacy pilot. Teachers and administrators in Pre-k through grade 3 participated in professional development Language Essentials for the Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). LETRS provided the teachers and administrators a solid understanding of how children learn to read and current brain research on the reading. The pilot is in year 3 of 5 years.
- Emergent Literacy Series
This series will increase teachers literacy knowledge and skills so that they can teach young children how to approach literacy skills and strategies in a playful developmentally appropriate way. The emergent literacy series will take place throughout the year.
